Marbled White butterflies are very distinctive and are unlikely to be mistaken for any other species. Both males and females have marbled black and white markings on the upper and underside of their wings. The markings on the male are blacker than those on the female, but the difference is most easily seen when the two are together.

Marbled Whites can be seen from June until late July, although a few individuals may still be around until late August.

They are found on unimproved grassland and feed mostly on purple flowered plants such as Wild Marjoram, Field Scabious, thistles and knapweeds. The caterpillars feed on the grasses, especially Red Fescue.
